One of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures at The Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery—and, in fact, throughout the country—is rhinoplasty. Also known as a "nose job", rhinoplasty can correct damage to the nose or restructure a nose that the patient feels is too prominent, too irregular, or too large. Our board certified plastic surgeons can help you decide if rhinoplasty is a good choice for you. We serve patients in Northern Virginia, Maryland, and the Washington, D.C. area.
Nose Surgery can be performed on patients as young as 15 for females or 17 for males. At this age, the nose is well-developed and cosmetic surgery can be considered, particularly in cases where an issue with the shape of the nose restricts breathing or is damaging to self-esteem.
A rhinoplasty can:
The Austin-Weston cosmetic surgeons use computer imaging and other advanced techniques to help determine exactly the right size and shape nose for you. This ensures that the final result fits your face proportionally and that you achieve the look you want.
The way a rhinoplasty is performed depends on the ultimate goals of the procedure. Depending on what changes need to be made, the nose surgeon may perform an open rhinoplasty or a closed rhinoplasty.
In an open rhinoplasty, an incision is made in the tissue between the nostrils, called the columella. Tissue and skin is then lifted from the bony structures of the nose so the nose surgeon can easily see the inner nasal structures.
In a closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made inside the nose. This approach is more appropriate for minor changes in the shape of the nose.
Risks of rhinoplasty are similar to those of any surgery. In addition, those who sing or depend on a specific vocal quality for their work should be sure to discuss this during a consultation. Restructuring the nose can sometimes change the resonant quality of the voice, particularly important for singers and speakers.
